Physicians and Nurse Practitioners

Dr. Robert “Bob” Shayne, M.D.

Dr. Shayne began Chester Pediatrics in the summer of 1981, and has been here ever since. He grew up in the Washington D.C. area, and graduated from Emory University in 1974 with a B.S. in Chemistry. In 1978, he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He then completed his pediatric residency in Richmond in 1981. He has served as the Chief of Pediatrics at Chippenham hospital, and the President and Vice President of Commonwealth Care of Virginia and the Pediatric Alliance (both local independent practice associations). Dr. Bob’s special interests include children with educational and physical challenges, sports medicine, obesity, and patient education. In his free time he enjoys computer technology, photography, and staying physically active. His wife of over 30 years and two grown daughters help make his life rich and enjoyable.

Dr. Kevin Campbell, M.D.

Dr. Campbell joined Chester Pediatrics in 1986 as the second pediatrician in the group. He grew up in Northern New Jersey, and after moving to Richmond for college, graduated from the University of Richmond. He worked as an orderly at Chippenham Hospital Emergency Room for a year prior to attending medical school. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, and completed his pediatric residency in 1986. Dr. Campbell plays the trumpet, and enjoys kayaking on the local waterways. The Campbells’ have three daughters who are all enrolled in the Chesterfield County Public School System and the family enjoys running, biking, and hiking.

Dr. Elizabeth McGill Cross, M.D.

Dr. Cross joined Chester Pediatrics in 1990. She grew up in Kings Mountain, North Carolina and graduated in 1983 from Erskine College with a B.A. in Biology. She then completed medical school at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1987, and her pediatric residency from the Carolina’s Medical Center in 1990. Dr. Cross is Board Certified in Pediatrics and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Cross enjoys volunteering with the Elijah House, a school in the inner city of Richmond. In her spare time she loves walking, yoga, and spending time with family and friends. Her husband is Dr. Robert Cross of Physicians of Family Medicine, and they have four children from elementary school to college age.

Dr. Mark Polanshek, M.D.

Dr. Polanshek joined Chester Pediatrics in 1996. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and graduated from University of California at Berkeley. He obtained a PhD in Biology and he taught college and did research for 10 years before going to medical school. He rode around Europe on a motorcycle in 1971. He completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia in 1985, and finished his pediatric residency in 1988, serving as Chief Resident.. He enjoys woodworking, home improvement, car repairs, occasional foreign travel, and time with his wife and daughter.

Dr. Kerri Steele, M.D.

Dr. Steele joined Chester Pediatrics in August of 1999. She received her B.S. in Biology from Wake Forest University and then attended Medical School at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. She completed her pediatric residency at the Medical College of Virginia in 1999. She likes going to the beach, running and playing golf. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.

Dr. Laina Bourassa, M.D.

Dr. Bourassa, a native of Chesterfield County, completed her undergraduate degree at the College of William and Mary. She received her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Bourassa then joined the United States Air Force, and completed a pediatric internship and residency at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. She spent the last four years practicing as a pediatrician at Hanscom Air Force Base, where she was also medical director of the Child Development Center and liaison to the local school system. Dr. Bourassa is a board certified pediatrician with special interests in child development, patient education and advocacy.

J. Gail Allen, C.P.N.P

Gail has been working with Chester Pediatrics since 1993 (part-time) and full- time since 1996. She grew up in the Triangle area of North Carolina and received her B.S. in nursing from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 1975. She received her Masters of Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia in 1990. She has a long history of pediatric critical care nursing at MCV Hospital. She served as the president of the Va. Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. Her special interests include asthma, adolescent care, sports medicine, and healthy lifestyle education. She enjoys pottery, cooking, gardening, and spending time with her dog.
